Data logging and recording is a common measurement application. In its most basic form, data logging is the measuring and recording of physical or electrical parameters over a period of time.

The data can be temperature, strain, displacement, flow, pressure, voltage, current, resistance, power, and many other parameters. A wide range of products can be categorised as data loggers, from basic devices that perform a single measurement to more complex devices that offer analysis functions and integrated displays.

Many applications are more involved than just acquiring and recording signals, sometimes involving a combination of online analysis, offline analysis, display, report generation, and data sharing. Moreover, applications are beginning to require the acquisition and storage of other types of data, such as recording sound and video in conjunction with the other parameters measured during an automobile crash test.

Data logging is used in a broad spectrum of applications. Chemists record data such as temperature, pH, and pressure when performing experiments in a lab. Design engineers log performance parameters such as vibration, temperature, and battery level to evaluate product designs. Civil engineers record strain and load on bridges over time to evaluate safety. Geologists use data logging to determine mineral formations when drilling for oil. Breweries log the conditions of their storage and brewing facilities to maintain quality.

A quick guide to Contactless
All new Contactless cards include the latest advanced security features required by the payment card industry. Payments are processed through the same secure Visa/MasterCard technology as Chip and PIN transactions. As an extra precaution, the SkyPay-300 will occasionally ask customers to enter their PIN to make sure they are indeed the cardholder.

Contactless transactions are covered by the same fraud protection as Chip and PIN transactions. Contactless also offers an extra level of security by allowing the customer to retain control of their card at all times, preventing behind the counter fraud from taking place.

Payments are made via radio wave communication between the customer's contactless credit card and the SkyPay-300; contactless cards have an antenna embedded in the card plastic.

By simply holding the contactless card within a few centimetres of the SkyPay-300, at the point of sale, the card is detected and the chip in the card is powered on. This allows a wireless communication link to be established between the card and the reader enabling the transfer of information which takes less than half a second to complete.

As soon as the transaction is complete, the SkyPay-300 will display a row of four green lights, indicating that the contactless card can be moved away from the reader.
The SkyPay-300 is fully compatible with the global EMV standards, as well as Visa's PayWave and MasterCard's PayPass.

Ansutek Data Logger 3 Software

This software is designed to capture information from a TCP/IP port and save it to either a text file or SQL 2005 or SQL 2008 database (earlier versions of SQL may be compatible).

One of the primary benefits of using data loggers is the ability to automatically collect data on a 24-hour basis. Upon activation, data loggers are typically deployed and left unattended to measure and record information for the duration of the monitoring period. This allows for a comprehensive, accurate picture of the environmental conditions being monitored, such as air temperature and relative humidity.

How does a data logger work?
First, the data logger is connected to a personal computer. Then the turn-key data logging software is used to select logging parameters (sampling intervals, start time, etc.) and initiate the logger. The logger is then disconnected and deployed in the desired location. The logger records each measurement and stores it in memory along with the time and date.

The logger is then reconnected to the personal computer and the software is used again to readout the data and see the measurements as a graph, showing the profile over time. The tabular data can be viewed as well, or exported to a spreadsheet for further manipulation.

Waffletechnology Thermal Printer Cleaning Cards

Waffletechnology raised & spring loaded platforms are used to reach the Print Heads leading edge and provide enough tension to rotate the platen for a full circumference clean.

This cleaning card removes burnt on paper particles and adhesive residue that build up on a printer’s thermal print head.

The minimum temperature of the print head is 158 degrees Fahrenheit, which will burn foreign material to the print head causing streaks and fading of the printed label or receipt.

The cleaning card is the most versatile method of cleaning a print head as it does not require the print head to be easily accessible or exposed. In most cases, with the power off, you insert it as you would the print media and just pull the card through.

What are the main types of barcode scanners?

Fixed Position Barcode Scanners

A fixed position barcode scanner is used by distributors and manufacturers. This type of barcode scanner can be used on a conveyor to automatically process cartons or pallets as they pass by the scanner.

Handheld Barcode Scanners (pictured)

How do I choose between direct thermal and thermal transfer printing?

The following will help you understand the differences between the technologies and how to select the appropriate print method for your application.

Direct thermal printing uses chemically treated, heat-sensitive media that blackens when it passes under the thermal printhead.
Direct thermal printers have no ink, toner, or ribbon.

Their simple design makes thermal printers durable and easy to use. Because there is no ribbon, direct thermal printers cost less to operate than inkjet, laser, impact, and thermal transfer printers. Most mobile printers use direct thermal technology.

Thermal media images may fade over time. If the label is overexposed to heat, light, or other catalysts, the material will darken and make the text or bar code unreadable. For these reasons, direct thermal printing is not used for lifetime identification applications. The readability of direct thermal labels, wristbands, and receipt papers varies greatly, depending on the usage conditions, but the technology provides ample lifespan for many common bar code printing applications including shipping labels, patient and visitor identification, receipts, and ticket printing.

For example, direct thermal labels can easily remain scannable after spending six months in storage in a distribution center, and direct thermal patient wristbands have a special coating that makes them water- and chemical-resistant. Common thermal printing applications include: shipping labels, including compliance labels; receipts; pick tickets; coupons; event tickets; citations and parking tickets; name tags; visitor passes; and more.

In thermal transfer printing, a thermal printhead applies heat to a ribbon, which melts ink onto the material to form the image. The ink is absorbed so that the image becomes part of the media. This technique provides image quality and durability that is unmatched by other on-demand printing technologies.

Thermal transfer printers can accept a wider variety of media than direct thermal models, including paper, polyester, and polypropylene materials. Thermal transfer printers can create extremely durable wristbands, asset tags, and certification labels, in addition to common labels, tags, and tickets. The specific label material and ribbon must be carefully matched to ensure print performance and durability.

By selecting the right media-ribbon combination, as well as specialty adhesives, users can create archival-quality labels to withstand temperature extremes, ultraviolet exposure, chemicals, sterilization, and more. Typical thermal transfer applications include: product identification; circuit board tracking; permanent identification; sample and file tracking; asset tagging; inventory identification; certification labels such as UL/CSA; laboratory specimens; cold storage and freezers; and outdoor applications.

Taking care of your printers with a reliable service plan can help avoid potentially expensive downtime and emergency repairs.

Here are some tips to help ensure your label printer printheads are functioning correctly.

Clean the printhead and platen roller at every ribbon change with a lint free cloth and a 90% isopropyl solution. More frequently if the unit is operated in a dirty environment.

Be sure to remove all rings or jewelry when working near the print head. If the glass etching gets scratched, remember you’ll be caught staring at the bottom of the garbage bin.

Use approved media in your printing application. Operators frequently compensate for an improperly matched ribbon and label by increasing printhead temperature or excessive head pressure which leads to premature failure of the thermal head.

Be sure to keep your ribbons and labels wrapped and stored in a clean area before usage. It only takes a small piece of airborne dirt to attach to a ribbon and label and then pass under the printhead to scratch the glass etching.

If you do need a printhead replaced, be sure to have the printer serviced by a certified technician. Proper adjustments and thorough cleaning by a trained technician can extend the life of your printhead.

Barcoding Explained

There is a mystique surrounding barcodes which intimidates many people. Let's eliminate it quickly. First the bar code usually doesn't contain descriptive data, (just like your social security number or car's license plate number doesn't have anything about your name or where you live).

The data in a bar code is just a reference number which the computer uses to look up associated computer disk record(s) which contain descriptive data and other pertinent information.

For example, the barcodes found on food items at grocery stores don't contain the price or description of the food item; instead the bar code has a "product number" (12 digits) in it. When read by a bar code reader and transmitted to the computer, the computer finds the disk file item record(s) associated with that item number.

In the disk file is the price, vendor name, quantity on-hand, description, etc. The computer does a "price lookup" by reading the barcode, and then it creates a register of the items and adds the price to the subtotal of the groceries purchased. (It also subtracts the quantity from the "on-hand" total.)

Another example of barcode data might be in a quality reporting application, the bar code may have only a single digit in it, but it may be titled "Failed Vibration Test". The computer associates the single digit with the test result.

So, bar codes typically have only ID data in them; the ID data is used by the computer to look up all the pertinent detailed data associated with the ID data more...
